Will A Summary Offense Appear In A Background Check?
I have been charged with a summary charge of trespassing for walking along a road without a sidewalk. This happened in the state of Pennsylvania. I will be starting medical school in August. Although this is only a minor offense, I would rather not have to explain myself either to the medical school or to future employers. Will a summary offense appear in a background check? If so, what are my options for keeping a clean record?

Yes, generally a summary offense will be displayed on a background check. In Pennsylvania, a summary offense is also considered an ordinance violation. It is not a misdemeanor or a felony. When the question on the application asks if you have ever been convicted of a crime, you should answer no. A summary offense is only punishable by a fine. You can have a summary offense expunged by a judge if you request so in writing.
